About the Museum
Preparations for The Shekou Museum of China’s Reform and Opening Up began in 2015, and the Museum officially opened to the public on December 26, 2017. It is the first museum in the country to treat the history of Reform and Opening Up.
The Shekou Museum of China’s Reform and Opening Up is located in the Sea World area of Shekou. It was commissioned by the China Merchants Group and realized by China Merchants Shekou. The Museum has been established in the Shekou Industrial Zone, which is known as the “test tube” of China’s Reform and Opening Up.
The exhibition has five chapters: the Tide of History, Making History, Opening Up History, Pioneering History, and the Future Trend, which summarize Shekou’s contributions to Reform and Opening Up. Through the exhibition of declassified historical documents, videos, manuscripts and other objects, we explore the construction of special economic zones and marketization reforms. China Merchants Group has been a key player in this historic transformation and it continues to play an active role in the era of deepening Reform.
Yuan Geng and his comrades-in-arms created the prototype Chinese Special Economic Zone，founding China Merchants Bank, Ping An Insurance, CIMC and many other famous enterprises. Their efforts represent the Shekou spirit. The "Yuan Geng" exhibition sector presents Yuan Geng's life through photographs, videos, manuscripts, speeches, and interviews, celebrating his important role at the vanguard of Reform and Opening Up.
Since 2016, the Museum has collected “memories” of Reform and Opening Up.—the chair that Deng Xiaoping sat in on his 1984 inspection tour of Shekou; the breath of sea air when the country first opened its door; the seams of a perpetually smiling Donald Duck that were carefully stitched by migrant workers…We celebrate the contribution of the Party and State leaders as well as the lives of migrant workers. People in Shekou as well as former residents of Shekou have provided the museum with feedback on its collection. We have contextualized this collection through on-site interviews, oral history and video recordings to bring to life the early days of China's Reform and Opening Up.
The Shekou Museum of China's Reform and Opening Up inspires people to take responsibility and to keep moving forward, writing the next chapter in the Chinese story!
